Brown Onion Video Recipe:

Birista, or crispy fried onions, are a delightful addition to many dishes, adding flavor, texture, and aroma.

Here’s a simple recipe to make them at home:

Ingredients for birista recipe:

  • 8-9 large onions, thinly sliced
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  • Preparation:
    • Peel the onions and slice them thinly. You can use a mandoline slicer for uniform thickness.
    • Separate the onion slices into individual rings. This helps in even frying and ensures crispiness.
  • Frying:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or a deep fryer. The oil should be hot but not smoking, around 350°F (180°C).
    • Carefully add the onion slices to the hot oil in batches. Don’t overcrowd the pan; fry in batches for even cooking and crispiness.
    • Fry the onions until they turn golden brown and crispy. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the slices and the temperature of the oil.
    • Stir the onions occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent them from sticking together.
    • Once the onions are crispy and golden brown, use a slotted spoon or a spider strainer to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Draining and Cooling:
    • Spread the fried onions in a single layer on the paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
    • Allow the fried onions to cool completely. As they cool, they will become even crispier.
  • Storage:
    • Once completely cooled, transfer the crispy fried onions to an airtight container or a ziplock bag.
    • Store them at room temperature for up to a week. Make sure they are completely cooled before sealing the container to prevent sogginess.
  • Usage:
    • Birista can be used as a topping for various dishes like biryanis, pulao, salads, soups, sandwiches, and more.
    • They add a wonderful crunch and flavor to the dish, enhancing its overall taste and presentation.

Enjoy your homemade crispy fried onions (Birista)!
