Ingredients:

  • 3-4 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Jeera
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 Black Cardamom
  • Cloves
  • Black Pepper
  • ½ tsp Asafoetida
  • 1 Green Chili
  • Curry Leaves
  • 1 Chopped Onion
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin-Coriander Powder
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1 Chopped Tomato
  • Salt to taste
  • Washed & Soaked Dal
  • 2-3 Glass Water

For Tempering:

  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Jeera
  • 1 Whole Red Chili
  • ½ tsp Asafoetida
  • Chopped Garlic & Ginger Juliennes
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri Red Chili Powder

Method:

  1. Wash 2-3 times the dal and soak it for 15-20 mins. Put the pressure cooker on the stove, add 3-4 tbsp oil, 1 tsp jeera, 1 bay leaf, 1 black cardamom, ½ tsp asafoetida, a few cloves, and a few black pepper. Let it sputter.
  2. Add 1 green chili, a few curry leaves, and 1 chopped onion. Stir it well until the onion becomes translucent. Then add 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste and mix it.
  3. Later, add 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp cumin-coriander powder, 1 tsp red chili powder, and 1 tsp garam masala powder. Mix everything well.
  4. Finally, add 1 chopped tomato and salt to taste. Give it a mix. Once the tomato gets mushy, add soaked dal to the pressure cooker and mix it well with the spices.
  5. Add 2-3 glasses of water and give it a quick stir. You can add or minus the water as per your requirements.
  6. Close the cooker and have 4-5 whistles. Once the pressure is released, open the lid and mix it.

For tempering:

  1. In a small pan, add 1 tsp of oil, 1 tsp jeera, 1 whole red chili, ½ tsp asafoetida, chopped garlic, ginger juliennes, and 1 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder. Let it sputter, and mix it with a spoon.
  2. Pour the tadka on top of the dal. Your dal tadka is ready to serve. Enjoy it with jeera rice and salad on the side.
