DELICIOUS DAL DHOKLI RECIPE AT HOME: GUJARATI COMFORT FOOD

Dal Dhokli Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Dhokli:

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon carom seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin-coriander powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water for kneading

For the Dal (Lentil Soup):

  • 1 cup tuvar dal (split pigeon peas), washed and soaked for 30 minutes
  • 4-5 glass water
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin-coriander powder
  • 6 Kokum, soaked in water 
  • Peanut, soaked in water
  • 2 tablespoon jaggery
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1 onion, finely chopped for serving
  • Ghee for serving

For Tempering:

  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 dried red chili
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoon oil
  • Curry leaves

Instructions:

Dhokli Preparation:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, carom seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin-coriander powder, oil, and salt.
  2. Gradually add water and knead the mixture into a soft dough.
  3. Divide the dough into small lemon-sized portions and roll them into thin discs (like chapatis).
  4. Cut the discs into small diamond or square-shaped pieces and keep them aside.

Dal Preparation:

  1. In a pressure cooker, add drain the soaked tuvar dal and salt. 
  2. Add 3 glasses of water, close the lid, and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal is cooked well
  3. Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and bring the dal to a boil. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin-coriander powder, chopped green chili, and soaked peanuts. Mix well.
  5. Add 6 kokum along with the soaked water into the dal.

Assembly:

  1. Once the dal is boiling, gently drop the prepared dhokli pieces into the dal.
  2. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. Add the jaggery to the dal.
  4. Check the dhokli for doneness; they should be soft and well-cooked.
  5. Once, the dhokli is done, prepare the tempering. In a small pan, oil, dried red chili, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. 
  6. Pour the tempering on top of the dal-dhokli. Add garam masala powder and mix well.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Serve hot Dal Dhokli with a dollop of ghee, finely chopped onions, coriander leaves, along with lemon slices, and fried green chili. Enjoy!
